Circular sun and sea scene on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo shows a sun with radiating rays above a rounded rock or hill, with a mast-like shape at the left and wave lines filling the lower half. The work uses fine black outlines, engraved-style hatching and stippled shading. The design sits centred within its circle on the forearm, against a plain pale wall and a patterned shirt sleeve.

We lost the mizzen before the rock showed itself, a grey back heaving out of the spray off Skerry Point, and Dad kept shouting the bearing as though the chart might change its mind. The wind had been at us since Tuesday. The lamp on the point had gone dark at midnight, so we steered by the sound of breakers and by Mags at the tiller, whose gloves had worn through to something worse than blisters.

By first light the cloud had split along the horizon and the sea had turned the colour of a gutted pike. Sun came through in long bars and fanned out over the rock as if it had been waiting for us to look up. There was a stub of mast lashed to a ledge on the lee side, grey with weed, and a fishing float snarled in the rope. Dad went quiet the way he did when he recognised something he would rather not have.
The float had a name burned into the cork, half of it gone: ELSPETH, and under that a date from the year before Dad was born. Grandad had sailed the Elspeth out of Hallow Haven and never come home, and the family had stopped saying the name over Sunday lunch. We rowed the skiff in on the flood, Mags swearing the whole way, and tied off to the mast stub while the tide turned under us.
We didn't take the float. Dad cut a notch into the mast with his knife, the way Grandad had notched the doorframe in our kitchen every birthday, and then we pulled back for the boat before the next squall. Behind us the sun kept climbing over the rock, and I swear the rays were still spreading long after the sea had gone flat and ordinary.
