Bladed glove tearing through skin on upper back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A bladed glove with long metal claws reaches out through a ripped opening in the skin, with a striped sleeve and a glimpse of an eye visible inside the tear. The rendering uses fine shading and highlights on the metal and fabric, with dark red blood dripping from the claw tips and edges of the wound. The composition runs diagonally across the upper back, with the claws extending towards the lower left of the frame.

Mr Pell says I am drinking my own rum, and perhaps I am, but the stripes on the cuff were dry this morning and the bucket was not.

The men will not come into the galley after dark now. The bosun asked whether the cook was keeping a pet, and I said only the grey rat that lives in the sugar cask. He laughed. But I saw the fingers move, the four long blades catching the lamplight, and when I reached to take it down, the wrist gave a small sigh like a man turning over in his hammock.

I have tried to be rid of it. I wrapped it in sailcloth, weighted it with a shot of iron, and dropped it over the rail at the change of watch. This morning it lay folded beside the peeling potatoes. The striped sleeve had split along the seam, and through the gap a single wet eye looked up at me from the lining, quite unsurprised.

I have sewn the seam shut with tarred twine and sat with the lamp until the sky greyed. I tell myself it is only leather and wire. But the red on the claw tips is not from the onions, and I have measured them against the ruler I keep for the biscuit tins, Captain, and they are a finger's breadth longer than they were on Sunday.
