Wolf head with arrow on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A snarling wolf head in grey shading with bold black outlines is pierced by a dagger and an arrow with green fletching. Red splatter and droplets surround the design, with a thin red trail running down the lower forearm. The grey shading uses stippled texture on the fur, while the red and green add colour accents against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the Hollin Pike Inn since Tuesday, and Ada Pell was counting tallow candles by the banked fire when Joss Harrow came in stamping, a carter's coat dripping meltwater onto the flags. He swore at the weather, at the road, and at the dog that wouldn't follow him, then drank his ale without looking up.

Something scratched at the back door a little before midnight. Ada eased it open a crack, expecting the ostler's boy, and found a grey wolf sitting in the drift with an arrow standing from its shoulder. The fletching was green, plucked from a goose that had died in the Fell Woods a year gone. The wolf lifted its muzzle and showed her every tooth, but it did not come closer. Its yellow eye went past her, over her shoulder, to the man by the hearth.

Joss knew the arrow. He had loosed it at Tallow Fell last winter, at a female who had been feeding her pups on his neighbour's ewes, and he had collected the bounty on a different wolf he'd found dead in a ditch. Ada watched the colour leave his face and understood that the story had been told wrongly for a year, and that the wolf had only been waiting for someone to come through the right door.

She barred the back door and said nothing. In the grey morning the inn was quiet, Joss's boots were gone from the peg, and a thin red line ran from the threshold across the white field towards the fell, each drop bright as a cherry in the snow until the drifts swallowed it.
