Blog Life lettering across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person seen from behind in a swimming pool, with water droplets on their shoulders and wet hair. The words Blog Life are tattooed across the upper back in bold blackletter script, with the lettering following the curve of the shoulder blade. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the pool tiles and water fill the background.

The forme for the Saturday handbills was locked up tight by six, yet every morning Arthur Pell found one line of copy he had never set. It sat at the foot of the proof in the old black letter the Hollins family kept for church notices, two words, Blog Life, as if it had slipped in from the next case.

Mr Hollins swore it was a boy's joke and had the lad scrub every sort in the cabinet. Nobody in Leeds had heard of a blog, and the dictionary in the front office had no such word. Arthur checked the pulls against the copy for a week, and each morning the line was back, the capitals a shade heavier, as though someone had leaned on the platen harder than any man in the shop would dare.
On the Friday he followed the ink. It led him out past the Mechanics' Institute to the public baths on Harrow Street, where the lamps were lit over a pool that had been drained for repairs. The tiles showed a tidemark of old blue, and a single sheet lay face down on the wet ledge. He turned it over with two fingers. The words were there in bold black letter, the ink still tacky, and when he held the page to the light he could read them backwards, the way only a compositor reads, letter by letter, each one set by a hand he knew well.
