Let it be script on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small script tattoo reading "Let it be" sits on the side of the torso, with the words slanting diagonally across the skin. The linework is thin and even, with the letters in a flowing handwritten style in dark grey-black ink. The shallow focus and warm, dim lighting soften the background, keeping the tattoo as the clear focal point.

You have been bent over the papyrus since the lamps were lit, and Corvinus has stopped correcting your letters, which frightens you more than his rod ever did. The manifest from the grain factory at Ostia is wrong by forty sacks. The consul's clerk wants it fixed before the Tiber barges cast off on the morning tide, and the sacks themselves are already sinking into the mud of the river bank, so no amount of ink will bring them back.

"Write the phrase at the foot," Corvinus says, not looking up from his own tablet. "The one my mother used when the harvest failed. Let it be. The sacks are gone, and the papyrus can hold only so much grief." You dip the reed and make the loops lean the way he taught you, long and slanting across the sheet, thin and even as a spider's thread.

You hesitate over the final word. Your hand wants a heavier stroke, the way the loss feels heavy in your chest. But the reed is light, and you begin to understand that a fine line can carry as much weight as a thick one if the hand holding it does not tremble. Corvinus leans over, watches the ink settle, and nods once before rolling the sheet closed.

Outside, the barges are already groaning at the quay. A gull lands on a mooring post and waits, patient, as the first sacks are rolled up the gangplank. You tuck the dispatch beneath your arm and walk down to the water, where the clerk will count everything again, and somewhere behind you a bell marks the hour.
