Small black ring tattoo on the neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a woman seen from behind, with her hair pinned up and a coloured woven headband. A small, bold black ring sits on the back of her neck, drawn as a simple open circle with a thick, solid line. The indoor pool setting is out of focus behind her, with a bright blue water surface and a glass-walled room.

The water in Bellhaven Dome has been rationed to a single lap-length since the thaw failed, and you are the one who signs the drawdown sheet each dawn. Nobody on the gallery level remembers what the blue used to look like. The glass walls have gone the colour of weak tea, and the old maintenance cables still hang like stripped vines above the shallow end.

On the morning the ring appeared, you were checking the intake grate when a coin of light came through the roof vent and lay on the surface in a perfect circle. It did not reflect anything. It moved when you moved. Marisol from the filtration crew said it was a seal, a sign the reservoir below had found its own level again. You did not believe her, but you wrote it in the margin of the sheet anyway, because the sheet had no column for miracles.

Over three weeks the ring thickened a little each day. The crews stopped drawing from the deep tank and drew only from inside the circle itself. By the fourth week a hairline gap had opened at its top where the light leaked through, and you learned to read that gap like a clock. When it closed, you would open the valves. Nobody asked how you knew.

On the last morning the gap was wide enough to put a hand through. You stood at the edge with your palm flat above the water, feeling the cool that rose from it, and understood that the ring had never been a seal. It was the shape the water made when it was given room to turn back into itself. You knelt, dipped one finger, and wrote tomorrow's date at the top of a clean sheet.
