Drawing of a tribal-style dragon design in black ink with blue shading, with spiked wings and a long curling tail, on a white background.

Blue and black tribal dragon design

Mixed · Flash

A black tribal dragon with spiked, flame-like wings and a long curling tail faces right on a plain white background. The solid black silhouette has sharp, tapering linework, and blue shading sits along the edges of the wings, tail and head. The composition is a single centred figure with generous white space around it.

The boarding house at Saltcote had been shut since the winter the pier collapsed, but the lamp in the top attic still burned each night, and Mrs Eliza Penhallow swore it was only the reflection off the sea. Constance Ray did not argue with her. She had come to clear the rooms for the agent, and the rooms had other ideas about how long she should stay.

On the third evening she found the scorched rail on the landing, black as a poker, with blue veins of something like frost running along its edge where a hand had gripped it. Below it, pinned under a sheet of brown paper, was a drawing of a creature with wings split into long, tapering flames and a tail that curled twice around the margin of the page. Someone had coloured its outline in blue ink, pressing so hard the nib had torn the paper. The beast faced the window, as if it had been waiting for a ship.

She took it down to the kitchen and set it against the teapot. The lamp upstairs flickered, once, and in the glass of the window she saw her own face, and beyond it the long shape of something folding its wings against the dark water. When she looked again there was only the sea, and the paper was blank.

In the morning she wrote to the agent that the rooms were sound, and that the upper floor could be let. She did not mention the drawing, which she had folded into her coat, or the way its blue lines still felt warm against her ribs.
