Blue and magenta swirl on a lower leg
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A dark, swirling vortex sits at the centre of the design, outlined in black with fine circular linework. Soft blue and magenta washes spread outwards from it, with small black ink specks scattered around the edges. The design is centred on the lower leg against a dark, glossy background.

The tide had already turned when Mrs Harcourt's cart reached the sands, and I could see the water standing up in the channel like a held breath. Her husband had crossed on the Thursday with the mules and the good lantern, and nobody had thought to tell the firth that the road had moved since then.

"Keep the grey mare on my left," I said, though I was nineteen and she had buried two brothers and a bad marriage without asking a boy's advice. She kept her eyes on the fold of the water and not on me, which was the sensible thing. Out past the marker posts the sea had begun to spin, a slow wheel of dusk-pink and cold blue where the sun had dropped behind Criffel, and the spray off its rim caught the last of the light and scattered it across the sand like dropped coins.
We went in at a walk. The mare's hooves found the hard ribs of the old causeway and held, and the cart creaked behind us while the wheel turned slower and slower, as if it had lost interest in us. Halfway over, Mrs Harcourt began to hum a hymn I didn't know, badly, and I was glad of it, because it gave the water something else to listen to.
We came up the far bank with the lantern still lit. Behind us the channel had closed over the road as neatly as a page turning, and the only sign of the crossing was the ink-black ring of foam drifting out to sea. She climbed down, shook the wet from her skirts, and handed me a shilling I had not earned.
