Watercolour spiral and formula on forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a large blue and teal spiral with a swirling brushstroke quality, set over pink and purple splashes. Thin black geometric lines form rectangles and arcs around the spiral, with a small number 13 and a handwritten-style formula near the base. Colour ink dominates, and the composition wraps across the forearm with the splashes trailing outward.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the cat, she has no patience for tales. You know the whirlpool off the Skerry Gap, the one that turns the grey water into a coin that never stops spinning? Old Ada Penhale tried to measure it. She had a slate, a brass rule and a stub of chalk, and every low tide for thirteen years she walked out along the mole and drew the curl of it, quarter by quarter.

Her husband Tom thought she had gone soft in the head. He was a netmaker and believed only in knots. Ada believed in the shape the water kept making, the same spiral as the chambered shell the fishermen sometimes bring up in their nets, though none of them had ever seen one whole. She wrote her sums beneath each drawing, fractions piled upon fractions, and the last of them she scratched into the wall of the lifeboat shed where the tide could not reach.
The winter Tom's boat failed to come home, the whirlpool went quiet for a whole morning. The gulls went silent with it, so the old men said, as if the sea itself was holding its breath. Ada walked out with her rule anyway and drew the still water. When she got home she worked out the last sum in the margin of her slate. It came to thirteen, which she took to mean thirteen more springs of waiting, and she kept her chalk sharp for every one of them.
