Colour tattoo of stylised blue and red lettering with two crossed wands on a person's upper back.

Blue and red lettering with crossed wands on back

Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two stylised letter forms, one in blue and one in red, set diagonally across the upper back. Two crossed wands, one blue and one red with black tips, run between the lettering. The lines are bold and even, with soft red shading around the red elements, and the composition is centred on the shoulder blades against plain skin.

Nobody in Coldharbour could say when the lane between the two workshops had stopped being a lane and become a border. Old Tom Pennick painted his letters in ultramarine and Mabel Ashdown painted hers in vermilion, and every spring they climbed their ladders on the same morning to freshen the boards, each pretending not to hear the other's brush tapping against the wood.

The trouble that winter was hazel. A cart of cut hazel came up the valley late, and Mabel bought the lot before Tom had finished his tea. He stood in the rain under her sign and shouted that a wand wanted a year's seasoning and she had no business cutting green wood. She shouted back that his grandfather had cut green wood and the wands had outlasted the grandfather. The miners at the top of the lane stopped to listen, as they always did, and put money on who would give way first.

In February a gale took the slates off the chapel hall, and the men who went up to shore it found a shop board face down in the gutter, its two letters flaking, one blue and one red, with a hazel pole laid across each. Nobody could tell which had been painted first. Tom and Mabel met in the mud at the bottom of the lane and turned the board over between them, reading the letters aloud badly, the way children do, and neither of them let go of the wood.
