Bird made of music notes on an arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A bird in flight is built from musical notes, with a treble clef forming its body and notes trailing from its wing and tail. The linework is fine and the wing has soft grey shading that fades into the skin. The tattoo sits against plain pale skin, with a blue paper sheet visible in the background.

The choirmaster at Saint Brannock's had a rule: nobody sang a note they had not first copied out by hand. So when the bird came down from the rafters during Compline, Brother Edwin stopped mid-psalm and simply stared at it. It was the colour of old vellum and it had a treble clef for a body, the curl of the clef spinning slowly over its breast like a heartbeat. Its wings were made of quavers and semiquavers that trailed off into grey smoke at the edges, as if the page had been breathed on.

Nobody could catch it. The novices tried with their caps and the cellarer tried with a ladder, and the bird only settled on the sill above the scriptorium door, tilted its head and sang back the wrong bit of the Magnificat in a voice like a wet thumb on glass. Brother Edwin was the only one who noticed that the notes falling from its tail were landing on the flagstones and staying there, small black marks that wriggled towards the ink-stained cupboard where the old missals were kept.

He went to find out why. He found the Abbot's copy of the Gloria open on the lectern, its last staff left blank, and beside it a pot of ink that had dried to a skin. He wrote the missing phrase himself, one stroke at a time, and the bird flew down and perched on the nib. When he lifted his pen, the clef was lighter, and the bird was sitting on the page with its wings folded, singing in his own handwriting.
