Treble and bass clefs with music notes on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black tattoo of a bass clef, a treble clef and several musical notes with curved stems, arranged in a vertical cluster on the upper arm. The linework is bold and filled in, with the notes overlapping the clefs and sweeping stems creating movement. The skin is a pale tone against a dark top, and the design is shown in black ink only.

Dear Mags, You'll think I've lost my wits, but the beans have finally done what Walter said they would. Along the wire he strung between the shed and the plum tree, the runners climbed in a line that looks exactly like the stave in his old hymnbook. Five strands, and every bean is a note. I've been out with a torch every evening to read them off to the cat.

The bass clef is the one that bothers me. It's the knot of ivy that came up through the paving stones last spring, curling round the base of the sundial in a fat loop with two dots of crocus beside it. Walter always said the bottom of a tune is where the earth lives, and he'd have been pleased with the ivy. The treble clef is harder. Dad's wisteria has wound itself up the drainpipe in one long swoop, and when the wind gets under it the whole thing sways like a dancer on a stage.
Last night the wind came from the east and the foxgloves all bent one way at once. I stood at the back door and counted the crotchets as they swung. Four beats, then a bean hanging off its wire by a single thread, then nothing. I won't pretend I understood it. But I hummed what I could hear, and the blackbird on the plum tree answered me in the very same key, so I've written it on the back of the gas bill and I'm enclosing a copy.
Come up on the bus when the runners are ripe. Bring your good scissors and we'll pick the whole tune before the frost gets it. Love, Ivy
