Blue dreamcatcher tattoo on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A dreamcatcher design sits centrally on the upper back, with a large mandala ring at the top, a smaller flower medallion beneath it, and three feathers hanging below. The linework is dark and detailed, with dotted rings and fine patterning inside the feathers. Blue ink dominates, with grey shading and some white highlights, and the design is centred on the back with the shoulders and hair visible around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nan Idris made the dreamcatcher from a bicycle wheel and a length of waxed sinew, and it hung from my mirror for eleven years before the road took it. I had not meant to lose it on the Carrow Flats. A crosswind leaned on the cab door, the cord snapped, and the thing went skipping across the tarmac like a flat stone on a pond, feathers flaring, until it snagged on a fence post thirty yards back.

I pulled into the lay-by with my hazards clicking. A lad of about seventeen was kneeling in the gravel beside a silver Corolla with a flat tyre, and his little sister sat in the back with her knees under her chin, staring at the sky as if it owed her money. I handed him the hoop when I walked back. He turned it over and counted the white dots around its rim under his breath, then looked up at me as though I had given him a map.

"It doesn't work," I said. "Not for me, anyway. I stopped sleeping right about the time it started looking nice."

He hung it from his mirror without a word, and the sister leaned forward to touch the largest feather with one finger. I changed my own tyre in the dark, which took longer than it should have, and by the time I had the jack stowed the sky over the flats had gone the colour of weak tea.

I drove off with the window down. In the rearview, a little blue ring turned slowly in the first light, throwing its pale dots across a stranger's dashboard, and for once I did not need to check it was still there.
