Mandala tattoo between the shoulder blades
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala sits centred on the upper back, built from concentric rings of petals, circles and scalloped borders around a small central dot. The design uses fine black linework and dense stippled shading to create depth, with the darkest tones at the outer edge and in the petal gaps. The image is in black and grey, with soft natural light and the subject's back, hair and a thin necklace visible against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit yourself down, the kettle's only just gone off and my knees have had their fill of standing. You want the story of the round drawing, the one with all the petals? Then you'll hear it the way my grandmother gave it to me, on this same bench above the harbour at Scarra, with the gulls making more noise than any of us.

There was a net-mender called Morag Tulloch, and she worked the big circle nets for her husband's boat. She never started at the edge. She began with one knot in the middle, a hard little knot no bigger than a barley grain, and she tied outward from it, ring after ring, until the net was wide enough to cover the whole bay. Every ring had its own petals, she said, where the mesh opened and closed like a mouth taking breath.
The autumn her husband went out to the far banks, the sky went the colour of slate by noon. Morag sat under the lamp and worked each night, and each morning the ring she had finished was a little wider than the one before. The men on the quay said she would never finish before the spring gales. She finished on the night the boat was overdue, tying the outer scallop by lamplight, and at first light there was a sail coming in along the line her net had drawn on the water.
So that's what the dot is, you see. Not the middle of anything. The first knot, the one you tie so there's somewhere to start from, and nobody ever looks at it twice. Mind the step on your way out, it's wet.
