Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha covers the upper arm and shoulder. The blue head has a silver-grey ornate headdress, detailed eyes, a red-tipped ear and a trunk patterned with an om symbol and floral motifs, ending in a small flower. Bold black outlines define the forms, with soft shading and a dark top visible in the background.

The shutter at Hollis Lane had stuck again by half eleven, and Dev Ahuja was on his knees on the wet pavement with a torch clamped in his teeth, listening to rain drum on the cardboard he'd laid down. Behind him the last night bus idled at the kerb, its driver calling out that he had nine minutes before the timetable stopped caring.

Above the sweet shop's door, Mr Oza had painted the elephant god years ago, blue as a gas flame, the silver crown catching the streetlight. The old man used to say the god did not mind waiting but did not like being ignored. Dev had walked past that painting every night for six years. Tonight he looked properly at the trunk curling down the wall, the small om sign on it, the flower at its tip like a full stop. He thought of the little brass figure his grandmother kept on her windowsill in Bradford, and muttered an apology for swearing at the gate.

He ran his fingers along the bottom rail and found it: not rust, not a seized roller, but a bent hairpin wedged in the track, the kind a schoolgirl drops and nobody claims. He worked it free with the wire hanger from his jacket pocket, and the shutter groaned, then rose smooth as a held breath. Inside, the trays of modak glistened under the strip light exactly where Mr Oza had left them to cool.

Dev took one sweet, set it on the step as he had been taught, and ran back to the bus with his coat soaked through. The driver waved him on without a word. In the wing mirror, as they pulled away, the blue face on the wall seemed to be watching them go, unbothered, its trunk lifted towards the empty street.
