Pink Ganesha with raised hand

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A pink elephant head with green eyes and a curled trunk, wearing a gold and red ornate headdress, sits beside a raised open hand that has a red Om symbol on its palm. The linework is bold and dark, with smooth colour fills and some shading on the skin tones and ornament. The design is centred on a plain skin background with a soft, even light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas, the hedge man came on Tuesday with his saw and his opinions, and I stood in front of the elephant and told him he would have to go through me first. He laughed, then he saw I meant it, and he went round by the compost heap like a sensible person. Dev painted him the summer you were born, with masonry paint left over from the back bedroom. He said pink was the only tin in the shop that wasn't beige, and that a god who clears the way for everybody ought to be cheerful about it. The gold on his crown is foil from a box of chocolates, pressed flat with the back of a spoon. His right hand is up, palm out, the way Dev held his own hand up when the television was too loud for him to think. He painted the Om on the palm in red with the smallest brush in the house, very carefully, and then said it was the only part he wasn't sure of, because it was the part that did the work.

The council wrote again about the boundary wall. They want it down by April, and I have put the letter in the drawer with the seed packets. Every morning I stand in front of that hand and ask it to do its job, and I don't feel silly about it, not even a bit.

Come up at the weekend and bring the good secateurs. Go round the back, not through the front gate, because the latch sticks. The eyes are still green. I touched up the left one last spring when it flaked, and it's a little greener than it was, which seems fair, since nobody has been looking after him but me. Love, Nan.
