Realism-style grey elephant head with a pink lotus flower and mandala linework tattooed across a person's upper back.

Elephant and lotus on upper back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A grey-shaded elephant head faces forward at the centre, with fine red ornamental linework on its forehead and a red mandala behind it. A large pink lotus flower sits in the lower left, overlapping black paisley and scroll-style linework. The shading on the elephant is soft and smooth, and the mix of grey ink with bright pink gives the composition strong contrast.

The priest painted the mark on Kesavi's brow before dawn, and you were the one holding the bowl of red while he worked, because the boy who usually held it had run off to the river to fish. The paste was cold and smelled of sandalwood and something bitter. Kesavi did not flinch. She watched the water through the gate with her small, clouded eye, as if she had been asked to remember something.

The procession wound from the temple steps to the market square, past the dyers' street where the cloth hung in ropes like wet flags. At the square the crowd pressed in, and a man selling lotus stems pushed one into your hand and said the elephant liked them. You doubted that. But when you lifted the stem toward her trunk, she curled it around the flower with a care that surprised you, then lowered her great head and waited until you climbed down to meet her eye.

The priest had told you the red mark was a syllable meaning the way back to the pond. Nobody had explained what that meant. Standing in the dust with the drums going, you thought of the lotus pool behind the old granary, where the water was deep and green and the flowers opened only in the early hours. You understood then that she had been walking toward it all morning, patient as a water clock.

At dusk you led her out through the reed gate. She went down the bank without a word, lowered herself into the shallows, and rolled once, slowly, until the water closed over her ears. When she rose, a single pink bloom had caught on the red mark on her forehead, and it stayed there, lifting and settling, while the lamps came on along the far shore.
