Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black script reading blue grass runs across the arm, with a simple outlined drawing sitting behind and beneath the lettering. The linework is solid and single-tone, with no shading or colour. The arm fills the frame against a plain light background, with the tattoo shown in soft focus at a slight angle.

Old Tobias Reeve brought his fiddle to the dance hall at Kettle Hollow the winter the river froze. Nobody asked him to play, because everyone knew he only had one tune and would not say its name. He sat by the stove with his boots steaming and watched the young men swing the girls across the boards until the lamps ran low.

Then a stranger came up the track with a grey mule and a sack of seed. He said he had walked down from the blue hills, where the grass grows the colour of a storm over water. He offered a handful of that seed in exchange for a single dance. Ruth Calloway, who had never once been asked, said yes before her mother could stop her.

The stranger took the fiddle from the stove, though Tobias did not remember giving it up, and played the old tune. The floorboards began to lift like a meadow after rain. By morning the hall was gone, and in its place stood a long slope of blue grass with the stranger sitting on it, tuning nothing. Ruth had seed caught in her hair and her feet would not stop moving.

Each spring, the people of Kettle Hollow say, the hill still sways when a fiddle is played across the valley, and one bent stalk lies flat as though someone has only just stepped off it. Count the stalks yourself and you will never get the same number twice.
