Live Love Laugh infinity script on thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black infinity symbol loops across the skin, with the words Live, Love and Laugh written in flowing cursive along its central crossing and lower loop. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against a light skin tone. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame, with a soft, plain background of skin.

You learn the endless splice in the back room of the chandlery, where Mrs Pell keeps coils of tarred manila stacked to the rafters. She makes you tuck each strand over and under until the rope has no end and no beginning, just a loop you can run your thumb around forever. 'Nothing on the water is ever finished,' she says, tapping the place where three strands cross. 'That's the knot that holds the rest.'

The boat you're working on belongs to a man called Osei, who wants his name on the transom, but his daughter has other ideas. She has chalked three words on a slate by the door in a looping hand: Live, Love, Laugh. You copy them onto the wood in thin gold leaf, letter by letter, while the tide turns under the slipway and gulls squabble over the fish market bins.

Halfway through the L of Laugh your brush slips, and you have to scrape the board and start again. Mrs Pell watches you work and says nothing, only hands you a spool of waxed thread. You stitch a small heart at the end of the word, the way her husband used to finish every sail he mended, so it looks deliberate, as if the mistake had always been meant to be there.

When the boat finally goes down the slipway, the words catch the low sun and the rope you spliced last winter rides on the bow beside them. Osei never asks who made the heart. You stand on the quay until the hull is a speck past the breakwater, and the gold keeps flashing, on and off, like something that means to come back round.
