Weightless script with four birds on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the word Weightless in flowing black script across the top of a foot, with four solid bird silhouettes flying upwards from the right of the lettering. The linework is clean and the ink is solid black, with no shading or colour. The subject is centred on the foot against a wooden floor, and the photograph is taken from above at a slight angle.

The mule would not go up Cold Gill without a stone in its mouth, Uncle Tam always said, so we carried the stones ourselves. I was nine the summer I first took the letters over. Mrs Haworth at the top farm wrote to her sister in Kendal every Sunday, the postman would not climb past the wall, and the job fell to whichever child had the lightest boots.

The sack held eleven letters that July. Mine was thicker than the rest because the envelope was padded with a pressed fern. The wind pushed at my back the whole last hundred yards, as if the hill wanted me gone. At the cairn I sat down to rest, and four swifts came off the scree below me, lifting one after another into the cold blue air, black as cut paper against the rock.
Mrs Haworth met me at the gate and weighed the sack in her palm the way you'd test a loaf. "You didn't stop for the swifts," she said. I told her I had. She laughed and said that was the trick of it, you had to let the thing you carried go up on its own. Then she wrote a word on the back of a spare envelope in that looping hand and gave it to me to keep.
I still have it. Weightless, it says, in joined-up letters that climb to the right. I didn't understand it at nine. I walked down the pass with an empty sack and felt my boots lift off every stone, while the swifts kept turning above the gill as though nothing in the world had asked them to come down.
