Blue jay on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A blue jay with detailed blue, white and black plumage sits side on, gripping a branch with its feet. The feathers are rendered with soft, layered shading and fine detail, set against a background of dark grey and brown smoke. Colour is concentrated on the bird while the surrounding shading is largely muted, and the design wraps along the length of the calf.

Sit in close and mind the fire, for the jay does not care for a draughty telling. Past the last stile at Hollin Edge there stood a wood so old its oaks had grown into one another, and in that wood lived a blue jay the villagers called Old Azure, though nobody could say who had given it the name. It was loud, bold and quick to scold. Every morning it perched on the same crooked ash bough above the smithy yard and screamed at the dogs until they gave up.

The winter the river froze to glass, the smoke came. It rolled down off the high moor in grey ropes and sat in the valley for nine days, and the sheep coughed and the children were kept indoors. On the fourth morning Tom Ashby's wife, Maud, went out to the wood to fetch kindling, and she did not come back by dark. Her husband went after her with a lantern and found only a trail of dropped sticks, and high above, on the ash bough, the jay watching him with one black eye.
He followed it. The bird hopped ahead from branch to branch, never flying far, always waiting for him to catch up, and where it stopped he found Maud sitting against a root with her ankle wrapped in her apron, too stubborn to cry out. The smoke had hidden the path from her, but the jay had not forgotten it. Every time she called, it screamed back, and that was the sound that brought them home.
So when you walk the wood this spring and hear a jay shouting at nothing, don't go shooing it off. Maud's grandchildren still leave a crust on the stile for it. Mind you, it always takes the crust before anybody else gets a look at it.
