Bird with bell and dagger on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A grey songbird with a red cheek perches on a gold-hilted dagger, with a small bronze bell hanging from a teal strap across its body and teal ribbons trailing below. The bird is rendered with bold black outlines, soft grey shading on the feathers and bright flat fills of red, orange, gold and teal. The design is centred on the outer thigh against a plain skin background, with a blurred room and a flash sheet visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The ferryman at Harrow Ford had a rule that no creature crossed the river with a bell on it, because bells announce you, and a border is no place to be announced. So when the grey sparrow came down onto the wet stones at dusk, with its red cheek bright as a coal and a little bronze bell swinging from a teal strap across its breast, he told it to be quiet about it.

The sparrow said it had been sent by the rope-maker's widow on the far bank, who owed the ferryman a debt of salt and had no other way to pay it. It said the message was tied to the bell's clapper and could only be read by someone who heard it ring. Then it stepped onto the blade of a dagger that lay half-buried in the mud, a gold-hilted thing older than either of them, and it balanced there with its ribbons trailing in the current like wet weed.
The ferryman did not believe in messages. But he believed in salt, and in widows, and in the sound of a bell that had crossed nine winters of frost without once being rung. So he took the sparrow in his palm and shook it gently, and the bell spoke, one clear note that carried over the water to the far bank, where a lantern moved in answer.
He poled the boat across in the dark. When he reached the other side, the dagger was gone from the mud, and the sparrow was gone from his hand, and the rope-maker's widow was standing at the landing with a sack of salt on her shoulder, asking him whether he had heard the bell too.
