Bluebird on a branch on the upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A bluebird with bright blue wings and a rust-orange breast sits on a thin branch with green leaves and a small bud. The linework is fine and the feathers are shaded with soft gradients to give a naturalistic look. The tattoo curves over the upper arm and shoulder, and the background is plain skin and a light grey top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Inspector Marta Quill had been told to log everything that crossed the footbridge at Hollin Gap, and by half past six on a wet March morning the list was mostly sheep, a milk churn and a man who insisted his goat was a dog. She wrote in the book with a pencil because the ink froze in the hut. When the bird landed on the barrier pole, she did not look up at first.

It was a bluebird, the sort her father had pointed out on the fence at home, its breast the colour of a cooling kiln brick and its back a blue so clean it looked wet. It had a twig in its beak. She knew the rule: nothing living was to be declared without a form, and no form had ever been printed for birds. Her colleague Dev laughed and said it was the first thing all week with a valid passport.

The bird hopped along the rail, set the twig down beside her hand, and flew back the way it had come, towards the grey slope on the far side where the wall ran down into the cloud. She picked the twig up. It had one leaf and a closed bud, green as a new coin. She wrote in the book: one item, branch, no duty payable. Then she struck out duty and left the rest blank.

At noon, when the next lorry came up the track, she pinned the twig above the stove and waved the driver through without a word. The bud had already split along one seam, and the hut smelled faintly of rain and something sweeter she could not name.
