Blue lily with stars and swirls on the torso
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A shaded blue lily sits at the centre of the design, with darker blue leaves, a small star and fine black swirling scrolls extending from the stem. The flower has soft gradients and highlights, while the outlines and scrolls are dark and crisp. The tattoo sits on the side of the abdomen, above a navy waistband, with the navel visible to the left.

Dear Tom, the lily opened on Tuesday, the night the frost came down so hard the glass sang. I had given up on it. The bulb came in the crate you sent from Rotterdam, wrapped in sailcloth and marked with nothing but a green cross, and for three winters it sulked in the back bed under the cold frame, all leaf and no bloom. Mrs Haworth said a blue lily was a fine idea in a catalogue but would never take to Yorkshire soil.

She was wrong, or the lily was stubborn, which in my experience comes to the same thing. On Tuesday I went out with the lantern at ten to check the stove, and there it was, pale blue like skimmed milk, a darker vein running down every petal, the stamens bright as pins. The leaves had curled round the stem as if they meant to hold on to something. I stood there in my nightdress with the lamp guttering and thought of you.
I have hung the tin star you cut at nine above the potting bench, and I have been counting the stars through the roof panes. Nine on a clear night, eleven when the moon sits behind the hill. Last night there were only three, so I suppose the weather is coming in off the sea, and you will be in the thick of it somewhere past the Dogger.
Keep your lamp lit on the harbour wall, the way we agreed, and I will keep mine lit in the glasshouse. If a flower can open in January, you can certainly come home by spring. Write when you make port. Your loving sister, Ada
