Hibiscus flower with tribal band on the hip
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded hibiscus flower with a stamen sits at the centre of the design, with its petals drawn in soft grey tones. A sweeping black tribal-style band with curled swirls extends from the flower to the left and up to the right. The skin is shown at close range against a dark background, with a light waistband visible at the bottom edge.

By half two the corridor lights have been dimmed to amber and the vending machine hums its one flat note, so you carry the hibiscus down to the end bay yourself. Someone left it on the drip stand that afternoon, a single red bloom in a yoghurt pot, and nobody came back for it. The petals have already gone soft at the edges, the way they do when a flower has only one day to be looked at.

Bay six is quiet. Mr Ferris Dunmore has been counting ceiling tiles since Tuesday, and he turns his head when you set the pot on the sill where the streetlight catches it. His wife grew hibiscus in a conservatory in Margate, he tells you, and the stamen always reminded him of a tuning fork someone had dropped in the flowerbed. You say you'll tell the day staff it's been looked after, and he says that's a kind lie, and you agree that it is.
Before you go he asks for a biro and sketches on the back of his fluid chart: a flower, then a long black tide running off the edge of the paper, curling back on itself at every turn. The Margate groynes, he says, the way the water came in over them in the afternoons when the tourists had all gone home. He presses the sheet into your hand as though it's a receipt you need to keep.
At six, handover. You write on the whiteboard, bay six settled, hibiscus on sill, and then you fold the chart into the pocket of your tunic. Through the window the car park is turning grey, and the black line on the paper seems to run on past the edge of the page towards the sea.
