Blue octopus with key and gems on the side

Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A blue octopus with a spotted head and orange-tipped tentacles wraps around a gold key, grey beads and two faceted gems, one green and one red. The shading uses smooth blended tones with bold outlines and highlights on the octopus and key. The design fills the frame diagonally on pale skin, with the tentacles curling outwards to balance the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper of the lamp-lit harbour stairs at Saltmarrow had a rule that no one climbed them after the bells. But on the night the fishmonger's girl lost her mother's key, she went down anyway, carrying a candle in a jar and nothing else. At the bottom, where the tide had left black weed on the steps, an octopus was waiting. It was blue as a kingfisher and spotted all over its head like a bowl of wet pebbles, and it had her key wound twice around one arm, the way a cat holds a bird it has not yet decided to eat.

She did not run. Her grandmother had told her that creatures of the deep only took what they thought was owed to them. So she asked what was owed. The octopus unwound one orange-tipped tentacle and tapped the stones beside it, where a string of grey beads lay hidden under the slime. Each bead was a sailor's prayer, the old woman had said, dropped in the water by someone who had not come home. The girl began to count them. Forty-one. Then forty-two, which she had not known was there.

She counted until the candle guttered, and when she reached the last bead the octopus slid the key across the step to her with the tip of one tentacle. Beside it lay two gems, one green as a bottle, one red as a bruise on a lemon. She took the key and left the gems where they were. In the morning the harbour master found forty-two fresh beads threaded on the rail, and nobody in Saltmarrow ever again asked who had gone down the stairs.
