She went down the steps cut into the cliff at low tide, a basket on her hip and a candle stub in a jar. The drowned hall was green with weed. In the middle of the flagstones sat a seahorse as big as a cart wheel, its coat banded purple and pink like a sunset folded many times, and its eye was a dark glassy disc with a star of light in it.

"You fed my bubbles," it said, though its mouth did not move. "Now you must give me the thing you hold most dear."

Mab thought of his pipe, his boots, the cracked bell on the wall. She offered each one. The seahorse only blew, and from its snout rose a string of turquoise bubbles that drifted up through the water like lanterns. Then she pulled off her wedding ring and dropped it in. The seahorse curled its tail into a tight spiral, caught the ring in its fin, and let out one last bubble.

When the morning boats came in, a man sat on the harbour wall with salt in his beard, turning a ring over and over, and he could not say how he had come there.
