Blue swallow on the lower abdomen

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A small swallow in flight is tattooed on the side of the lower abdomen, with its wings spread upward and its head turned to the right. The bird has bold black outlines, blue shading across the wings and body, and pale cream areas on the wing linings and cheek. A yellow beak adds a small accent, and the design sits against plain skin with a purple fabric edge visible at the bottom left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cook had sworn that swallows find a ship before land finds it, and for nine weeks south of the Plate you had only believed him because the alternative was too grey to bear. Now the *Constance Ayre* was wallowing in a swell the colour of wet slate, the fore topsail split like an old glove, and a blue bird came skittering across the rail as if it had paid for its passage.

It landed on the capstan and lay there with its wings thrown wide, too tired to be frightened. Hobbs, the bosun, wanted it over the side. Swallows do not cross open water, he said, so whatever this one was, it was no good luck. You said nothing. You cupped it in your palms, warm as a boiled egg, and carried it below, where you soaked ship's biscuit in tea and dripped it into its beak with the end of a pencil stub.

Three mornings later it stood on your knuckle, shook its tail, and flew at the first grey smudge of land you had seen since Montevideo. It circled the masthead once, as though checking the crew were all still aboard, then streaked off toward the low hump of Tarrow Island and the cliffs where the gulls were quarrelling.

That evening you sat with the chart and marked the *Ayre*'s position in pencil. Beside it, small and careful, you drew a swallow with its wings raised, and under it wrote the hour the bird had gone.
