Blue butterfly with swirls on upper back

Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised butterfly with two large, wing-like shapes, outlined in fine black linework and filled with blue shading. Curling swirls and small dots extend from the wings on both sides, adding movement. The colour is mainly blue with a few darker tones, and the design sits centrally on the skin with plenty of space around it.

Dear Nell,

The vats were sulking again when I came in this morning, the indigo gone flat and greenish on top the way it does when nobody has fed it properly since Friday. Mr Okafor had left a note on the door asking me to stop shouting at the boiler, which I have not done, and I was halfway through skimming the scum when a butterfly came in through the broken pane above the drying racks. Blue as the vat at its best, the kind of blue you only get from a fresh dip, with wings that folded and unfolded like someone trying to decide.

I stood very still, which you will say is a first. It drifted down over the rim of number three and hovered there, and where its wings nearly touched the liquid the surface shivered in little curls, the same curls I have been trying to print on the calico for a month and never got right. Every dot it left behind on the wooden lip seemed to me a drop that had flicked up and forgotten to fall.

Then the first van came up Harrow Lane with its horn going, the racks rattled, and the butterfly lifted straight out through the window as if it had an appointment. I went to the sill and found nothing but a smear of wet blue on the glass.

I am not telling you this to be fanciful. I am telling you because I have decided to dip the next bolt of cloth in number three regardless of what the vat thinks, and I want you to know I am not afraid of it anymore.

Love, Maud
