Tribal phoenix tattoo on lower leg
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bird-like phoenix with wide, flame-tipped wings and a long, curling tail is drawn in solid black outline on skin. The linework is bold and uniform, with no shading or fill, and the design is centred on the leg with plenty of empty skin around it. The ink is black only, set against a light skin tone with visible pores and a blue denim fabric at the left edge.

Nobody aboard the Hesper Vane believed old Tomas when he swore the phoenix had flown off our bow during the squall. He was certain of it, though. He said the black lines of it had lifted off the paint like smoke, wings spread wide, flame at every feather tip, and that its tail had curled once around the bowsprit before it went. We were three weeks out from Madeira with the foremast sprung and the pumps going every watch, so a man sees things.

I told him the sea takes what it likes and gives back driftwood. He only shook his head and went below to sit with his bread and his tin cup. Next morning the glass was rising and the swell had dropped to a long grey heave. I went forward to check the lashings on the spare spars and found the bow fitting scorched along its edges, the ironwork blackened in a clean sweep shaped exactly like two raised wings.
Tomas died in the autumn, in his bunk in Falmouth, and his sister posted me a small wooden box with his things. Inside was a sketch on brown paper: a bird drawn in one unbroken stroke, the wings ragged at the tips, the tail a spiral ending in a neat little curl. Beneath it, in careful pencil, he had written, Tell them it came back for the bow.
I have it pinned above my chart table now. When the wind gets up and the timbers start to talk, I look at that curl at the end of the tail and think he was not drunk after all.
