Blue tulip on the side of the waist
Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo
A single blue tulip on a slim stem sits on the side of the torso, with two dark, curved leaves rising from the base. The petals are shaded from deeper blue to lighter blue to suggest volume, while the stem and leaves use black ink with soft grey shading. The photograph is a close, slightly angled view, with a hand resting at the hip and a dark waistband below the tattoo.

The crate arrived on the Tuesday boat, damp straw packed round it and a label in Dutch, and you carried it up the sixty-one steps of Skerrow Light because the boatman would not climb past the landing. Inside, wrapped in newspaper gone soft as cloth, were three bulbs the colour of a bruised plum, and a note from your sister saying they would flower in spring if you were stubborn enough.

Salt kills most things on the rock. You tried anyway, in a tin bath on the gallery rail, turning it each morning so the lamp would not scorch the leaves. Your father used to say the light reads every boat that passes and never once asks where it is going. You talked to the bulbs the way he talked to the lamp, low and without expecting an answer.
In April one stem came up, grey-green and stubborn, and then, on a wet morning, a closed cup of blue so deep it looked damp even when dry. Its leaves curled outward like a hand reaching for a rail in a swell. You sat beside it through a gale with the glass humming overhead, and when the wind dropped, the petals had opened a finger's width.
The relief vessel came out that afternoon, and the mate photographed the flower for the logbook, saying nobody on the mainland would believe a tulip grew on Skerrow. You let him take the picture. You knew it was not the flower he would remember, but the one you had kept alive through the long dark months on the rock.
