Floral cluster on a hip and thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of flowers, leaves, buds and small stems forms a tall vertical arrangement on the side of the hip and upper thigh. The linework is dark and defined, with soft grey shading on the petals and leaves to add depth. The image shows only skin, a white top, a silver charm bracelet and a white brick wall behind, with no face visible.

The clock above the nurses' station said ten to three when Mrs Abara's son left a jam jar of peonies on the windowsill of Bay Four. Their heads were already heavy, and petals kept dropping onto the sill like tissue. Nobody claimed them, and I was the only one on Ward 7 with a spare minute, so I carried the jar to the sluice room and sat with it under the strip light.

I drew them on the back of a spare obs chart with a blue biro. I started with the bud at the bottom because it was the part that would last longest, the one with the pinched top like a pomegranate. Then came the open flower with its ruffled edges, then the leaf that folded over to show its paler underside. I was still shading the petals when Dr Pryce came through looking for bloods on bed twelve and found me with the jar between my knees.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Keeping them," I said. He studied the sketch for a long moment, then told me his mother grew peonies in Carmarthen and every one of them had ants crawling out of the centre. He took the bloods form and went off down the corridor whistling, which I had not known he could do.
The cleaner threw the flowers out at six. By Friday, though, the chart was pinned beside the sharps bin, and someone had added a stem curling off the edge. Then a leaf. Then a little cluster of buds with a sticky note reading 'for Pryce'. By the end of the month the paper was a border of stems that ran the length of the notice board, and nobody on nights could remember who had started it.
