Soft pink and red rose tattoo with watercolour-style shading on the side of a person's ribs, with a dark garment held at the waist.

Pink rose on the side ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A single rose in shades of pink and deep red fills a small area on the side of the ribcage. The petals use soft, blended shading with lighter edges and darker folds at the centre, giving a painterly, watercolour-like effect. The rose sits off-centre against bare skin, with a dark fabric and a hand holding it at the edge of the frame.

The ovens have been running since three, and the flour on your forearms has dried to a pale crust. Mrs Okafor's order sits on the steel bench under a tea towel: a sponge for her daughter's engagement, three tiers, and one request written in capitals on the docket. ROSE, NOT FLOWERS. You have spent four years learning the difference.

You start with the palest pink, buttercream thinned with a drop of rosewater, laid on in soft strokes so the edges look like something left out in the rain. Then the deeper colour into the folds, a darker red pressed from the tip of the nozzle, lifted and pressed again, until the centre tightens into a knot of petals no bigger than a thumbprint. Beyond the window the glass shows only your own reflection and the orange of the street lamp.

Dawn comes up grey over the car park while you work. Gareth from the bins knocks twice and leaves a flask on the step without coming in, the way he always does. Your shoulders ache. The rose on the top tier looks wrong, too neat, so you scrape it back and try again, softer, letting one petal fold over another as if it has grown tired of holding still.

When the van arrives at seven, you slide the box onto the passenger seat and ask the driver to take the corners slowly. Mrs Okafor will open it in a hall full of people and nobody will notice the second attempt. Only you will know which rose is the true one, and you will carry that small secret home with sugar still under your nails.
