Blue waves and lotus flowers across a back

Japanese · Back · Colour · Photo

A bare back shows a tattoo of stylised blue waves curling diagonally from the shoulder blades down towards the waist. Smooth gradients and white highlights give the water depth, and the lower back carries several realistic pink, orange and red lotus flowers with green leaves. The composition is wide and centred, with a hand resting on the upper shoulder at the top edge of the frame.

The ovens in Pell Street light at quarter to four, and you are already up to your wrists in flour when the tide turns beyond the shutter. Mrs Okonedo's delivery van idles at the kerb with its headlamps on. You knead the sourdough the way your aunt taught you, folding the dough over itself in long slow pulls, listening for the sea. Through the back wall the harbour sounds like someone breathing under a blanket.

By five the window has gone from black to the colour of weak tea. You slide the first trays out and the crust sings as it cools. A fisherman with salt in his eyebrows buys four rolls and asks if you heard the gulls going mad over the breakwater. You say you did, though you were only listening to the dough. He laughs, pays in coppers, and leaves the door open so the cold comes in and curls around your ankles like a cat.

Near six the yard pond is still skinned with ice at its edges, and the rosy light catches the rim of the water butt. You dip a hand into the bowl of starter, lift it, and watch it fall in pale ribbons back to the surface, bubbles breaking open like small flowers. The bread is ready. You have made enough for everyone who will come today, and you cut the first loaf while it still steams, the crumb pulled wide and white, and you think: this is the hour the water gives back what it took.
