The orchard at Holm Vale had three hundred trees that year, every one of them white with blossom, and the bird, a small blue thing with an orange waistcoat, would not leave the one bough that hung over the well. The steward wanted it felled for firewood. The miller's boy tried to shoo it off with a sling and missed, which was lucky for him, because the queen heard of it and had him stand at the gate all night holding a lantern.

Then the snow came early, and the bird stayed, and the blossom did not fall. People said it was the bird holding the petals on with its own warmth. The steward went quiet after that. Nobody cut a branch in Ysmere again, and the well water tasted of cherries until the queen's own grandchildren were grey.

So when someone asks what the blue bird wanted, tell them it wanted nothing but a branch still in flower, and that is a thing a kingdom can rarely give. Now hand me the cup. My throat is as dry as that old well.
