Cardinal perched on a branch on the upper back
Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo
A red cardinal with a crest, yellow beak and dark outlines perches on a bare branch with two olive-green leaves and a small twig. The bird's body is filled with solid red and shaded with darker red and black along the wing and tail feathers. The tattoo sits on the upper back, with the bird facing left and the tail extending down to the right.

The elephants had gone to a farm near Ely in March, and by October the Ayling & Dunne Travelling Circus existed mostly as a list in Ruth's ledger. She sat in the cold wardrobe van with her reading glasses pushed up into her hair, counting sequins into jam jars, and tried not to listen for the cage in the corner. Sergeant the cardinal had travelled with the knife-thrower's act for eleven years, and he had stopped singing the week the big top came down.

She found the cage door open at first light. The bird was not inside, and he was not in the frost on the lorry roofs either. He was sitting on a hawthorn at the edge of the winter field, a scrap of red against the grey hedge, with two leaves still clinging to a twig beside him, olive going bronze at the edges. Ruth went out in her slippers and held up the seed tin, rattling it the way the ringmaster used to rattle the peanut bag. Sergeant turned his crested head towards her and did not come.
She went back to the van and made tea, and when she looked out again the bird was on the fence post beside the tin, picking at spilt millet as though he had always meant to. The ribbon tricks, the rope, the applause that never quite filled the marquee: none of it had mattered to him. He had only wanted someone to stop asking and leave the door open.
By morning the tin was empty and the post was bare. Ruth opened the ledger to the last page, uncapped her pen, and wrote beneath the sale of the elephants: one cardinal, returned, under own steam.
