Bluebirds and cherry blossom on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two blue and yellow birds on branches, with one bird flying out of a pale green birdcage at the top. Pink cherry blossoms, small red berries and green leaves surround the birds and cage. Bold black outlines and smooth shading sit over bright colour fills, with a soft wash of teal and purple behind the design.

The cage had hung on the gatepost of Hollin Cottage since the spring the miller's wife died, and nobody in Ashby Wold could remember a bird inside it. Mabel Crouch swept beneath it every Monday all the same, because her grandmother had said a gate with an empty cage kept its luck.

The bluebirds came in March, when the cherry trees along the lane broke into flower. Two of them, quarrelling over a twig on the wall. Mabel named them Sorrow and Late, after the two words her father never finished saying, and she scattered crumbs on the sill. They stayed. The village found that more troubling than a bird that flew off, for a bird that stays is a bird that wants something.
By the first frost Late had grown thin, and one morning Sorrow sat alone on the cage roof, calling down the lane in a voice like a rusted hinge. Mabel understood then what the cage had been for. It had never been for keeping anything in. She fetched the little brass key from her grandmother's drawer, turned it in the lock, and swung the door wide against the wind.
Sorrow did not leave at once. For a week it went in and out, bringing pale petals and red rowan berries to the wicker floor, until the cage was a nest of blossom. On the last morning the lane was white with fallen flowers, and two blue birds sat on the branch by the gate, watching her with the patience of things that have already decided to come back.
