Mother Hesketh had sold scent at the Lantern Hall for thirty years, and she never let a girl leave the dancing without a dab behind each ear. 'Heat carries it,' she said. 'Men remember a smell before they remember a face.'

The night the travelling rope-dancer came, the hall was packed to the rafters with mill folk from Oldham and the fiddlers were already sweating. The rope-dancer, a woman called Ada Pym, had bought a bottle of violet attar on credit and promised to pay on Saturday. Saturday came and went. Instead Ada stepped onto the wire above the floor with a fan in each hand and a teal ribbon hanging from her hat, and the whole hall stopped to watch her.

Halfway across, a gust came through the open door and the wire sang. Ada wobbled, and a cloud of pink powder rose from the bottle tucked in her sash, drifting down over the dancers like cherry blossom in April. Nobody choked. Everyone laughed, and the fiddlers, caught off guard, struck up a jig that matched the swaying wire exactly.

Ada reached the far side without falling. When she climbed down she pressed the bottle into Mother Hesketh's hands and said the debt was paid, since the scent had made the whole hall dance at once. The old woman turned the stopper over in her palm, feeling the fine brass lattice against her thumb. 'Keep your feather,' she said. 'I'll keep the cloud.' Ever after, the Lantern Hall smelled of violets on a Saturday night, and nobody asked where the pink dust had come from.
