Bold tribal band on forearm and hand
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm and part of the hand are covered in a bold black tribal-style design of interlocking bands, spirals and triangular shapes. The solid black linework contrasts with the bare skin between the bands, and the pattern follows the curve of the arm down toward the wrist. The patterned mat behind the arm adds busy background detail, and the warm lighting gives the photo a yellowish cast.

Maurice Tennant logged the mat at 7.12 on a Tuesday, between an umbrella and a child's wellington boot. Nobody came for it. It sat on the shelf of the lost property room at Hallowby Junction, rolled tight, smelling faintly of coconut oil and the diesel of the Penzance service it had come off.

He unrolled it on the staff room table one slow afternoon to look for a name tag. There was none. There was only the pattern: bands running edge to edge, black triangles set in rows like teeth, and at the centre a spiral that turned in on itself, then, where the weave bent, turned back out again. He traced it with a biro, the way he had once traced signal diagrams when he was new, and found the line never once crossed itself.
The railway had been drawn like that too, once. Old Mr Dacre, who worked the points for forty years, used to say you could read a route by its curves if you knew where to look. Maurice thought of him when the 6.40 came in late and the platform lights buzzed overhead. He wondered who had made the mat, and what they had been wrapping up when they set it down.
On Friday he carried it out to bench four and left it there, unfolded, weighted with a stone from the car park. He did not wait to see who came. The 6.40 pulled in, the doors sighed open, and the wind off the cutting lifted one corner of the mat, showing the spiral turning towards the rails.
