Tribal spiral piece on shoulder and upper arm
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large tribal design covers the shoulder and outer upper arm, built from bold white spirals outlined in black. The spaces between the spirals are filled with fine black chevron and dotted linework. The black and white photograph is taken against a dark background, which makes the solid black outlines stand out.

The adze had gone blunt by the second tide, and Ruhi still would not let anyone else touch the prow of the canoe. Her uncle said the scroll at the bow curled back on itself like a fern trying to hide. She said nothing. She had been drawing the curl in the sand every evening with a knuckle of driftwood, and every morning the sea took it back.

Her grandmother had taught her that a spiral is only a wave that decided to stay. You do not carve the edge of it, you carve the space it leaves. So Ruhi cut the pale wood in long rolls and left the dark channels between them to be filled with tiny chevrons, the way rain pocks a lagoon, one stroke at a time, until her palms were black with soot and her eyes stung in the lamplight.
When the squall came down from the north in the dry month, the men dragged the boat up the shingle and argued over whether it would float at all. Ruhi walked down to the water barefoot. She laid her hand on the prow where the scroll turned inward and felt the grain run round in the same circle the current made off the reef.
They launched it at dawn. It rode the swell without a single lurch, turning slowly on its own axis like a shell in a rock pool, and her uncle stood on the beach with his arms folded and said nothing at all, which from him was a kind of song.
