Book spine and reaching figure on a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A tall tattoo runs up the back in the shape of a spine formed from stacked books. At the lower left, a figure in a long dress reaches up towards the books beside a ladder and an ornate scrolled panel. The work is shaded in black and grey with soft gradients across the page edges and dress folds, and the design fills most of the back.

The ladder had nineteen rungs, and Ilse had counted them every morning for a year before she dared to climb past the eleventh.

The books rose along the tower wall in a column, spines out, so that from the square the whole thing looked like the backbone of some great sleeping animal. Keeper Anselm told her the tower had been built by a man who lost his memory in a fever and wanted to hold it again, one volume at a time. Ilse did not believe him, but she liked the sound of it. She climbed on Tuesdays, when the bells were quiet and the light came through the slit window and lay gold on the page edges.

On the nineteenth rung she found a book with no title, its boards swollen with damp. Inside was a list of names, every person who had ever climbed the ladder, and beside each one a single word: returned, or kept. Her own name was not there. At the bottom of the last page, in a neat hand, someone had written: Read me aloud, and you will be the one who stays.

She closed the book and carried it down. In the square she read it to the crowd, and when she reached the last line she stopped, and for a moment nobody spoke. Then Anselm laughed and took the book from her, and she saw that the word beside her name was blank and waiting. She put the ladder back where it belonged and walked out of the town with her goat, leaving the spine of books standing against the sky for whoever came next.
