Gothic castle skyline on the back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A thin, single-line outline of a gothic castle skyline, with pointed spires, towers and a long crenellated wall. The linework is even and fine, with short hatch marks along the lower walls and roofs for texture. The design is black ink only on pale skin, and a silver coin sits beside it for scale.

The chart office at Marrowby smelled of ink and wet rope, and Mr Halloran had been dead a week before anyone thought to open the bottom drawer. Inside were forty sheets of tracing paper, each one the castle on the headland seen from a different place on the water: from the lifeboat slip, from the deck of the Brannock ferry, from the end of the breakwater where the gulls stand in rows. He had never drawn the same spire twice.

I took the drawer home on the last crossing of the day, wedged between my knees on the bench, and the castle slid past the rail the way it always did, pale against the dusk, its long wall hatched with shadow where the light gave up first. Most of the sheets were for the tourists who bought them framed. One was not. It was pinned to a scrap of oilcloth, drawn from the water at low tide, with the north tower counted in short strokes. Beside the Muster Tower he had written in his neat capitals: ONE SHORT. The spire had come down in the gale of fifty-three, and the town had never raised it again. I sat with the paper on my knee until the ferry bumped the pier and the deckhand shouted my name twice.
The next morning I took a pencil to the chart and gave the tower its point back, pressing so hard the lead shone. Then I walked down to the slip to check it against the real thing. Counting from the left, the way he would have, I came to the gap where the spire should be and stopped. The sky was empty there, and I left it that way.
