London skyline silhouette on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a solid black silhouette of the London skyline, with Tower Bridge, Big Ben, the London Eye and several birds in flight. It is drawn as a flat, filled shape with no shading, and the skyline sits on a curved band that follows the curve of the thigh. The photograph is taken at close range against a plain skin background, with a black lace garment edge across the top of the frame.

Sit down, the lot of you, the generator's still on its tea and the dodgems aren't going anywhere. You want the story of the board? Then you'll hear it the way my mother told it, with the candy floss going cold in your hand and no interrupting.

Two thousand and three, the fair was pitched on the Common outside Bexley, and my Aunt Nell was twenty-two and mad for paint. Her father wanted Brighton on the front of the Waltzer, all piers and bathing huts. Nell had been to London once on a coach trip and said she only remembered it from the top deck: the bridge like two black shears, the clock tower like a finger raised for silence, and the big wheel turning over the river like a slow thought. When the signwriter's tins ran dry she had one pot of black enamel left over from the ironwork. She said, that'll do. No colour, no shading. Just the shape of the city against a bit of sky.
She painted it on the curved board above the Ghost Train, lying on a plank with a ladder under her, while the kids lined up below with their fingers on their lips. Halfway round the bend she ran out of nerve and then out of light. A flock of pigeons came down off the car park lamps and settled on the wet wood. Nell didn't shoo them. She put every one in, flick, flick, flick, quick as a pencil, and told the foreman they'd been there all along.
The board's still up above the Ghost Train. Every autumn, when the light goes flat, the birds come down to it. Nell died the winter after. Last season I climbed the ladder to tighten the bolts, and the wind got under the sheet, and the whole skyline turned black against the sunset, bridge and tower and wheel, and eleven pigeons lifted off it at once. Lord knows where they went. Back to London, I expect, which is more than the rest of us ever managed.
