Botanical floral back piece with sunflower and lotus

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the back in a botanical arrangement of flowers joined by black swirling vine linework. A pink lotus sits high on the upper back, with a shaded grey rose and a pale white magnolia-style bloom in the centre, pink cherry blossoms scattered between them, and a large yellow sunflower low on the back. A blue peony extends onto the shoulder and upper arm, and the background is plain black.

Dear Ines,

The frost took the glasshouse roof again last night, so I have spent the morning on a ladder with a bucket of putty and a sour temper. Your father's seed catalogues are still on the potting bench where you left them, the sunflower pages dog-eared. You always said the big yellow ones looked like they were watching the road for somebody. I thought of that when the sun came up over the orchard and every cherry bloom on the lower terrace had gone pink at once, as if someone had spilled paint on the grass.

Mrs Halloran came up from the village for the lilies she ordered in March and stood in the doorway a long while without saying a word. She asked after you. I told her you were in Leeds, learning to cut hair, and she said that sounded like a sensible trade for a girl with your hands. Then she asked what I was going to do with the white magnolia, the one that never flowered properly in six years, and I surprised myself by saying I would let it climb the wall by the gate, where the lane can see it.

The lotus pond is still green at the edges. The lotus itself has come up pink and stubborn after the cold, and I have decided to take that as a message.

Come home for the sunflowers in August. I will keep the seed heads for you, as always.

Love, Mum
