Colour and black linework tattoo of flowers, vines and paisley scrolls across the side of the ribs, in a botanical fine line style.

Floral and paisley linework along the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of pink, red and mauve flowers, leaves and vines sits across the side of the torso, with black paisley scrolls and curling stems in fine outline. The flowers are shaded with soft gradients and the linework is thin and even, while the scrolls are left as open outline. Black ink forms the linework and the flowers use colour, and the composition sweeps from the upper side towards the hip.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The council sent Dennis Hale with shears to cut the bindweed off the east face of Calder Court, because the residents had complained it was climbing into the lift shafts. He stood in the car park and looked up at it. Vines ran from the cracked paving in loops and scrolls, curling at every landing like the pattern on a good tablecloth, and the flowers were mauve at the top and coral by the bins, each one as wide as a saucer. Nobody on the ground floor would say whose it was.

Mrs Sadler on the ninth floor said her mother had carried a cutting up from the field the year the flats went up, when the cows still leaned on the fence. Dennis took the first stem at the base and went home. By morning two stems had come back thicker than the first, and a paisley curl had opened over the window of the Patel boy's bedroom as if it had been drawn there with a fine pen.

He went back every week. He cut, and the vine wrote itself over the lift shaft and into the window box of the man who had complained. In the end Dennis stopped cutting and started carrying a kettle up the stairs on Thursdays, pouring the water slowly at the roots.

On Thursdays the council van sits by the bins with its engine off, and Dennis sits in the cab with a flask, watching the coral flowers open at the level of the hip of the building. He has not filled in the form that would have ended it.
