Black line tattoo of a flowering rose sprig with leaves in a fine line botanical style, running down the side of the ribs.

Botanical rose sprig on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework tattoo of two open five-petalled flowers with buds and leaves, arranged as a vertical sprig that runs down the side of the torso. The outlines are clean and mostly unshaded, with fine hatching in some leaves and stamens drawn in the centre of the flowers. The image is entirely black and grey, with soft natural lighting and a shallow focus that blurs the background.

She climbed the stairs every evening anyway, a hundred and twelve steps, and wound the clockwork that turned the great lens. On the tenth night a stranger's boat knocked at the landing, rowed by a man with brambles caught in his collar, who asked for a cup of water and nothing more. He drank it standing, then looked at the wall where the tide tables hung and said the light had been wrong for years. It had been burning for the wrecks, he said, not for the ships.

She asked what he meant. He told her to take a cutting from the hedge below the cliff path, the wild rose with five petals and one bud still closed, and to set it in the lamp room where the heat would reach its roots. Then he rowed away before she could thank him.

She did as he said. By spring the stem had climbed the iron rail and opened two blooms, pale as gulls. The next winter, when the sea came up white over the causeway, the fishing boats steered by the sweetness of them as much as the glass, and every one of them came home.
