Botanical sprig band on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A band of leaves, small lily-like flowers and sprigs of fine foliage wraps diagonally across the arm, with the sprig extending toward the lower edge of the frame. The linework is delicate and fine, with light shading inside the leaves and petals. The tattoo is entirely black and grey against pale skin, set on a plain white background with a white sleeve at the top of the frame.

I hated that rule more than the diesel smell. So on Thursdays I stayed late, tying the last lilies into bundles with rosemary and whatever ferns were limp enough to haggle over, and I gave them to whoever looked tired enough to take them.

The man who came for the leftovers said his name was Desmond, and he never bought anything whole. He wanted one lily, two stems of the fine feathery foliage, and a single leaf folded back on itself. He turned the sprig over in his fingers like someone reading small print. "My wife said a station was just a garden that forgot to grow," he told me once, nodding toward the far platform where the Carlisle train pulled in.
For eleven Thursdays he came. On the twelfth he didn't. I found his sprig on the bench under the clock, wrapped in a page torn from the timetable, with one departure circled in biro: 18:42. That was the Carlisle train. I stood at the edge of the platform with a lily in my hand while it came in, and nobody got off, and I laid my flower on the bench beside his.
