GRL PWR lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a small two-line tattoo reading GRL PWR in black, hand-drawn capital letters on the inner forearm. The lines are thin and even, with the letters set slightly unevenly, and the tattoo is shown in sharp focus against pale skin. A hand with red nails rests across the forearm, and the white rolled sleeve and plain light background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The second mate had spent three days scraping rust off the bulkhead in the forward store before anyone noticed the letters underneath, two rows of capitals scratched into the grey paint with a nail or a marlinspike. Nobody aboard the Halvard Rose would own to it. Ingrid Solberg, who had joined at Rotterdam with a tool roll and a reputation for never being seasick, put her thumb to the first L and said the strokes were too careful to be a drunk's work.

She took the question to Teodor, the cook, who had been sailing these routes since before the containers came in. He wiped his hands on his apron and said the previous cook's daughter had worked a summer aboard, a thin girl who wrote on everything, the back of ration tickets, the inside of the locker doors. The letters sat unevenly because the ship had been rolling through the Bay of Biscay that week, and the girl had not cared whether they lined up. He said her father had never painted over anything she left behind, and that the ship's painters knew better than to try.

Ingrid did not paint over it either. On the night watch she sat on an upturned bucket by the store door and ran her finger along the grooves while the hull groaned around her. At the next port, when the pilot came aboard and asked for the logbook, she signed her name under his in the same uneven capitals, pressing hard enough that the pen went through to the page beneath.
