Two reaching hands on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of two hands, one above the other, reaching towards each other across the skin. The linework is fine and sketched, with cross-hatched shading on the knuckles and fingers. The tattoo is black on pale skin against a dark red wall, and it sits in the centre of the frame with plenty of empty skin around it.

The rope had iced over in the night, so I sat on the cold stone and worked the knots loose with my teeth while the wind came over the top of Hollin Gap in long grey shoves. Across forty yards of nothing, with a drop I never looked into, my sister Ines was doing the same on her side. We had agreed on a signal years ago: one hand raised, palm out, meaning I can see you. Nobody had ever needed it.

That morning the cloud came down before we were halfway across. Father always said the mountain lied about distance, and it did. Ines called out that the cornice had gone soft. I could hear her but not see her, only the blue shape of her coat at the edge of the white, and then the sound of a shelf of snow letting go somewhere below us.
I reached out with the rope end in my fist, though there was nothing to reach for. My arm stopped where the air was thinnest. She did the same from her side, her fingers stretched long and cold, and for a moment we were two hands in the fog, not quite touching, like the old engraving in the farmhouse kitchen where a finger's width of nothing separated the man from the one who made him.
The line went taut when she finally caught the loop and pulled. We came across the gap together, one careful step at a time, and when I reached her side she was still holding up her hand, palm open, as if she had forgotten to put it down. I took it. Her fingers were stiff and rough and entirely real.
