Botanical sprig with peony and fern on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline sprig runs diagonally up the forearm, with a rounded peony-like bloom, feathery fern fronds, a star-shaped succulent flower and small leaves along a single stem. The linework is fine and even, with light grey shading inside the peony for depth. The design is set against plain pale skin and a soft grey background, with the arm raised and a little hair and ear visible at the left edge.

The fern was the first thing to wilt, which I should have expected, because Mabel had packed it on top where the sun reached it through the windscreen. By the third hour past the Salt Fork turn-off the peony cutting had gone the colour of old paper, and I was talking to it, which is what you do when there is nobody else for two hundred miles.

Mabel gave me the sprig the morning I left Dunmore. She had cut it from the bush behind her kitchen, a peony her mother planted in a tin bath, and wrapped the stem in wet newspaper and a strip of my old shirt. 'Plant it where it can see the sea,' she said, which made no sense, because the sea was eleven hundred miles behind me and I was driving the wrong way for it.
The road bent around a dry lake bed near noon. A gravel track ran off towards a sign with no words left on it, only a painted star. I stopped. Somewhere out there a succulent had flowered once in a wet year, and nobody had seen it but the goats. I thought of the little star-shaped bloom on Mabel's stem and got out, and the heat hit me like a door.
I didn't plant anything. I wet the paper from my water bottle, wrapped the sprig again and tucked it into the shade under the van's back wheel, where it could see the sky through the spokes. Then I drove on, watching the mirror, and by the time the next town's water tower came up over the rise, the ferns had lifted a little, like someone who has been told the news is better than expected.
